Spaying and Neutering

Spaying and Neutering is important for more than one reason!

We all know that spaying and neutering of your pet will prevent unwanted litters. There are many cats and dogs in shelters, waiting for the perfect home!  There are more benefits though.

Decreased Risk of Contagious Disease

Spayed or neutered pets tend to wander less and therefore come into less contact with other animals. There is also a reduced risk of getting lost or getting into an accident. On top of that, there is less risk of being exposed to contagious diseases if your pet wanders less.

Reduced and/or Eliminated Risk of Certain Types of Cancer

When you neuter your pet, there is no more risk of them developing testicular cancer. Spaying means no more risk of ovarian and uterine cancers. It also reduces the risk of female pets developing breast cancer, as long as the surgery is performed before your pet reaches reproductive maturity.

Improved Behaviour

Sterilizing pets helps to prevent unwanted behaviours that occur as a result of a pet’s reproductive instincts. Other than wandering, this includes spraying, excessive yowling or howling. Spaying or neutering can also improve your pet’s  temperament.
This is because sterilized pets are also less territorial. This means they are less aggressive toward other animals and people.

When to Spay or Neuter

All cats can be spayed/neutered by 6 months of age and in some cases sooner, especially in multi-cat households with a young male and female kitten that have the potential to breed.

Dogs are recommended to get spayed or neutered between 6 – 18 months of age. Our age recommendation is tailored to each patient and is based on factors including breed, behaviour and owner’s needs.
